PDT to Improve Skin Conditions
Nothing is more painful to those in their teens than poor self-image. Acne creates a terrible cycle of self-consciousness, anxiety, depression and self-isolation. Our goal at Dr. Amy Vaughan Dermatology is to clear your skin, stop future breakouts, reduce existing scars, and prevent future scarring. For the treatment of acne, Dr. Amy Vaughan Dermatology utilizes photodynamic therapy.
What is Acne Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that utilizes a photosensitizing molecule (frequently a drug that becomes activated by light exposure) and a light source to activate the applied drug. The skin is coated with a layer of the drug, a prescription solution that makes the target area more susceptible to light. The combination of the light energy and the drug results in the treatment of acne. It is the quickest and most effective way to control acne and clear the skin. It does not require dangerous oral medication or long term dosing of antibiotics that requires strict compliance and can create antibiotic resistance and other complications. The acne photodynamic therapy also promotes healthier, smoother skin, and may even prevent future acne and skin cancer.
How PDT works
Acne Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an especially effective in-office acne treatment. Acne photodynamic therapy is a treatment that uses a light-sensitive drug and a light source to destroy the acne on your skin. The drug helps make the cells or your skin more sensitive to light. When the light is directed at the area where the drug has been placed, the drug is activated and the cells are destroyed. PDT controls resistant, hard-to-treat active acne by combining light and a special light-activated solution that targets and destroys acne activity. PDT also diminishes older acne scars leaving your skin smoother.
