Causes and Treatments of Dandruff
This skin condition, though it can form on any oily part of the body, is typically found on the scalp and ears. Dandruff is typically characterized by white or yellow flakes on the skin (or surrounding hair). These areas may become infected, itchy, red, or irritated. Dandruff is not associated with health risks, and is simply the result of an overproduction of skin oil, and a sensitivity to a type of skin yeast called malessizia.
Anti-fungal shampoos are designed to reduce the frequency of flare-ups. When other parts of the body besides the head are affected by this type of skin irritation, anti-fungal creams can be used to treat and minimize flare-ups. Salicylic acid shampoos reduce the amount of oil on the scale, thus reducing some of the root cause of dandruff. Tar shampoo is designed to help relieve symptoms such as itching, inflammation, and flaking.
Since dandruff is caused by the body’s own oils, there isn’t an actual cure, but the symptoms can be treated. A variety of anti-fungal shampoos and topical creams are available to reduce frequency or intensity of dandruff. Contact Dr. Amy Vaughan Dermatology to discuss what treatment method is best for you.
